Telecoms network transformation

Our history

WTL has come a long way since our foundation in 1997 – from innovations in switching to driving advanced low latency applications and delivering core network solutions.
1997

WTL founded – switching for the next generation

Originally founded as World Telecom Labs, WTL began life supplying innovative, carrier-grade switching solutions with integrated SS7 and VoIP protocols to operators across Europe. Architectural flexibility enabled WTL to overcome complex signalling challenges.
1999

Patented tech for long-distance backhaul

Novel Network Optimisation Protocol delivered significant cost savings for long-distance carriers – increasing capacity by up to 10 times on standard network links, disruption backhaul and carrier communications for international traffic.
2002

Deployed full national fixed networks

WTL’s innovative SS7 over IP solution was deployed by two operators – in Austria and the Netherlands – to provide fixed-line services nationally. The installations provided enhanced performance and drew on WTL’s SS7 expertise and pioneering approach to switching.
2004

Moving into space!

In a first, WTL’s patented Network Optimisation Protocol (NOP) was deployed to provide maritime coverage for vessels in Scandinavia, with VoIP connectivity enabled through satellite links. NOP significantly reduced bandwidth requirements – and costs.
2005

Supporting carrier-neutral IP voice exchange

Thanks to WTL’s integrated VoIP and SS7 solution, Traff-X became the first and largest carrier-neutral voice exchange in Belgium. The highly scalable IPNX solution enabled Traff-X to grow rapidly, supporting around 100 million voice minutes each month.
2007

Driving inter-exchange traffic in Nigeria

WTL played a pivotal role in supporting ICN Nigeria’s growth, as it became the largest inter-exchange carrier in Nigeria, with traffic exceeding 100 million minutes per month. WTL’s VoIP switches were augmented with STM1 connectivity, extending the range of available options.
2014

Growing international recognition

WTL’s innovations and the surging volume of traffic handled by our systems saw numerous awards and growing industry attention. The portfolio expanded with successful deployment of Lawful Interception solutions in Latin America.
2015

Expanded capacity and rural connectivity

We introduced high-capacity connectivity to extend our core session and routing solutions, while delivering innovative, turnkey systems to enhance rural coverage. Connecting the unconnected in Tanzania – and bringing new options to remote regions everywhere.
2016

Rural voice and data services for the unconnected

WTL’s Vivada solution enters commercial service, delivering connectivity for remote regions, backed by innovative satellite backhaul. Virtual SBC, new traffic handling records and first LTE innovations – while Facebook-backed Telecom Infra Project recognises our innovations.
2017

LTE innovation lab launched in Brazil

WTL’s growing status and contribution to rural connectivity recognised with invitation to address African telecoms regulators forum, while further awards secured. National Roaming solution deployed and new ground broken with LTE downlink performance.
2018

Expansion to Asia and messaging growth

Vivada 4G and 2G deployed in Asia, expanding network reach and coverage. New SMS hub solutions brought efficient, scalable delivering for A2P and P2P messaging to Africa. Shortlisted for more awards, WTL continued to disrupt rural connectivity options.
2019

Inter-exchange connectivity for Nigeria

WTL was chosen to provide Inter-exchange connectivity for Nigerian carriers, affirming the performance of our solutions for critical national infrastructure. Further rural connectivity projects were completed, extending coverage to close the digital divide.
2020

Towards new horizons

Founder-led management buyout and company relaunch as Wireless Technology Labs, solidifying growing strength in mobile core network markets. Coverage projects for hundreds of villages and low-cost LTE solution for connectivity confirmed momentum.
2021

Urban densification and coverage

WTL gained Ntel certification and approval for innovative 4G small cells, supporting urban densification and mobile broadband delivery. New IXC customers drove traffic throughput to new levels – and continued exposure to rural connectivity projects brought further success.
2022

Winning operator approval

2G and 4G RAN solutions gained additional approvals in Nigeria for the provision of rural connectivity, while core signalling solutions continued to pass acceptance tests. WTL gained further ground as a disruptive provider – broadening choice for MNOs and MVNOs.
2023

Heading towards 5G

WTL garnered more approvals for its innovative 4G RAN solutions – while preparing for 5G launches by developing its own 5G core network solutions, from the ground up. Delivering cloud-native performance, WTL’s 5G core delivers unprecedented ROI.
2024

Unlocking MVNO business models

WTL’s core network technologies chosen by Nigeria’s leading MVNE provider – supporting new MVNO models and unlocking competitive mobile services for millions of customers. New PTToC solutions deliver low-cost options for robust and multi-device communications.
2025

New partnerships and growth

More MVNOs, more connectivity and new members of the team. WTL’s investments and deployments continued to deliver for customers and their subscribers, with more MVNOs seeking to deliver differentiated services and reach new segments.
2026

Ultra efficient 5G core

WTL unveils new, 3GPP-compliant 0MB container 5G SA core, eliminating overheads associated with traditional approaches to virtualisation. The result? A lean, distributed core that delivers maximum performance, resilience and scalability – without complexity.
