Analyst firm Ovum has long commented on broadband penetration rates across different geographies. A recent report focused on the significant untapped potential of key African markets and a number of different approaches that seek to realise this potential.
Of course, the numbers are huge, but the problem lays in bringing connectivity cost-effectively. This is a significant challenge but, fortunately, it’s attracting an interesting ecosystem of innovation, spanning traditional mobile players, Facebook and more. A key finding is that partnerships are essential – but an unwritten conclusion is that there’s no single approach that will deliver the connectivity required.We agree. It’s going to take a great deal of effort and collaboration to bring the benefits of broadband – and, specifically, high-speed broadband – to the unconnected citizens of many African nations. Yet, the goal is fundamental to economic development.
